Reminder from city fire officials about fan-related fires

Reminder from city fire officials about fan-related fires

By Brad Aubin

North Bay Fire and Emergency Services has responded to three oscillating fan fires in the past six months.

That’s led them to remind people not to leave the fans running for a prolonged period of time.

“We’re very concerned about this latest string of oscillating fan fires,” says Steve Vibert, Interim Deputy Chief. “Leaving these types of fans on for days at a time is unsafe for everyone in your home. We want to remind everyone that they need to take responsibility for their family’s fire safety.”

Tips to prevent oscillating fan fires include:

  • Never leave unattended
  • Avoid running fans for lengthy periods of time
  • Inspect cords for fraying and fan for excessive dust regularly
  • Clean thoroughly
  • Unplug when not in use
  • Be wary of older fans
  • Unplug immediately if you hear unusual sounds or smell burning
