63 Million It Is
A special meeting of council will be held on Monday evening to vote on moving forward with the new community and recreation centre project.
This after a council committee gave its support to the $63 million price tag Thursday night.
That includes the guaranteed maximum price of $61.4 million, a $1 million contingency and $500,000 for internal costs.
The facility will include two side-by-side rinks, a community space, a walking track, and more.
EllisDon project manager Jeff Malo told council they don’t just provide a building to the city, they provide cradle to grave services and want to turn over a building that is not going to be a burden in the future.
“Our proposal ensures fiscal responsibility across the construction, across the maintenance and across the operations of this facility,” he says.
Malo also says they don’t just plan and build facilities for today.
“As our communities change and as our aging infrastructure changes, this building will adapt to meet the needs and maintain it’s fiscal sustainability to ensure we limit financial burden to those changes,” he says. “We’ve thought about utilizing spaces and how do we change that space in the future if this is not going to accommodate a patron tomorrow.”
Malo adds they include locals in the construction of the building so the community benefits in that way too.
Monday’s special council meeting begins at 5:30 pm.
Pending approval, the project is expected to be substantially complete in August 2026
