63 Million Price Tag on New Arena
$63 million is the price tag coming to council Thursday for the new Community and Recreation Centre project.
A staff report includes the Guaranteed Maximum Price of $61.4 million, plus a $1 million contingency and $500,000 for internal costs.
While staff are recommending approval, another option in the report could bring the price down by about $2.2 million.
That would remove the contingency and all second level programming, including the walking track, elevator, an administration office and a washroom.
It would also cut out finishes in four change rooms, 54 parking spots and all so-called softscape like trees and planters.
The report also says the target for substantial completion of the project is now August 2026.
An update two months ago stated mid-July 2026.
The square-designed building will include two side-by-side regulation-size ice rinks, a community room and recreational spaces to support sports field users.
Thursday’s special committee meeting takes place at 5:30 pm in the council chambers.
Officials with the city say following Thursday’s presentation, Council will reconvene next week to decide on the pricing options and whether to proceed with construction.
Having already secured $25.78 million from the Government of Canada’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program, the city continues to seek additional funding from upper levels of government, potentially securing up to $2 million more for the project.
