72 Teams in North Bay this Weekend
The 13th annual World Girls Hockey weekend is coming up and a sell-out crowd is expected to watch the Nipissing University Lakers women’s team play Western on Friday night.
This as 72 youth girl’s U11 to U18 teams from across Ontario are converging on the area.
The North Bay and District Girls Hockey Association is hosting a tournament Thursday through Sunday, with officials saying they’re going to Friday’s game.
The local tournament is being played at arenas in North Bay, Astorville, Powassan and Sturgeon Falls.
Dozens of hockey federations around the world take part in World Girls Hockey weekend, which looks to celebrate and grow the game.
Hockey Canada says last year over 6,500 participants contributed to the growth of women’s hockey at 55 events across the county.
They included games and skills sessions, free skates, road hockey, and more.
As of Monday, about 250 of the $5 tickets were left for Friday’s Lakers game.
