Affordable Housing Projects in the Works

More affordable housing projects could be on the way around the region.
Mark King, Chair of the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) says they’ve discussed the possibilities with various local politicians.
“We’ve got five different projects that we presented to the federal government,” he says. “We’ve done it with MP Anthony Rota, MPP Vic Fedeli and MP Marc Serré. There are projects in East Ferris, in West Nipissing and The City of North Bay that we’re looking at.”
King expects staff to report back at the next board meeting.
“I’ve been trying to push the point about vacant land that we have,” he says. “If we can’t develop it then we need to do something with it because that’s capital sitting there that could be used for maybe a small housing project. They’re working on that right now which is really good.”
This week DNSSAB and Canadore officially cut the ribbon on a cohabitation complex for older adults on Commercial Street.
The former school and health unit building has been repurposed into 61 two-bedroom units.
King says that’s helping cut down on the wait list for affordable housing in the region.
He says over 1,500 people are waiting.
