AMO highlights Provincial issues affecting Property Taxes

AMO highlights Provincial issues affecting Property Taxes

By Richard Coffin

The Municipality of Calvin is encouraging area residents to research provincial election candidates’ positions on municipal funding issues.

The call comes as the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) has launched an awareness campaign on provincial issues that improve quality of life around Ontario.

One area is curbing reliance on municipal property taxes to fund provincial responsibilities.

“The Municipality of Calvin faces significant challenges in providing services to our residents while managing the financial burden of downloaded provincial government programs,” says Mayor Richard Gould.

AMO says billions of property tax dollars are diverted each year to pay for provincial programs, driving up tax bills.

“Municipalities are the foundation of Ontario’s economic prosperity and quality of life,” says Robin Jones, AMO President and Mayor of Westport. “But the funding arrangements that municipal governments rely on to deliver services and infrastructure are broken. Ontarians should demand that all provincial parties commit to the necessary actions to keep our communities safe, affordable, and prosperous.”

Other key areas of the association’s campaign include tackling the homelessness crisis and investing in local infrastructure to build housing.
