Apartment fire may relate to battery charging equipment

By Richard Coffin
One person was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation after a fire in a 4-plex apartment building on Second Avenue East on New Year’s Day.

Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders says fire fighters responded just after 3 am and found an apartment unit completely engulfed in flames.

He says there is significant fire damage to the apartment with smoke damage in the others.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation but may have been caused by battery charging equipment that is not CSA approved,” Saunders says, in a release.

He says the residents of the apartment were asleep at the time of the fire and alerted to the danger by the properly maintained smoke alarms.

“Another clear example that working smoke alarms do save lives,” adds Saunders.

A homeowner was charged earlier this week for failing to maintain working smoke alarms after a fire in the kitchen area of a home on Trillium drive.
