Area food drives supporting residents in need

You’ll notice a city fire truck parked outside a couple of local grocery stores this week.

The annual ‘Fill a Fire Truck’ food drive is back, in support of the North Bay Food Bank.

On Tuesday, North Bay Professional Firefighters will be set up outside Sobey’s on Algonquin (10 am to 5 pm). The next day, they’ll be outside Parker’s Your Independent Grocer, again from 10 am to 5 pm.

Over the past nine years, North Bay Fire & Emergency Services and the North Bay Food Bank have raised more than $26,500 and collected over 17,800 pounds of food through the Fill-A-Fire Truck campaign.

“With the continued generosity of our community, we’re hoping to exceed $30,000 in donations and 20,000 pounds of food collected this year,” states a release.  “North Bay residents have always stepped up to support their neighbours, and we’re excited to see what we can accomplish together during this year’s campaign.”

The event is being held as part of Fire Prevention Week.

Residents are encouraged to add a few extra non-perishable items to their cart and drop them off on their way out of the store.

In West Nipissing, École secondaire catholique Franco-Cité’s annual “Une canne ça dépanne!” food drive takes place on Wednesday, in support of the West Nipissing Food Bank.

Residents are encouraged to place non-perishable items in a bag or box in a visible area outside their door before 4 pm, with volunteers collecting the donations from 4-8 pm.

If your household is missed, donations can be brought to the school during school hours.

Last week, in North Bay, nearly 10,300 pounds of food and $450 were collected by West Ferris Secondary students.

Over 100 people took part.

Donations were delivered to the North Bay Food Bank.
