Area snow depth up 10 cm since mid-December
Area snow depth is within its normal range for this time of the year.
That from the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority, which says the average snow depth for all three area measurement sites, in North Bay, Corbeil and Chisholm was recorded at just under 31 cm on Friday.
That’s up by just over 10 cm from the last survey in mid-December
“December was colder and wetter than average, and [Friday’s] snow survey reflects these conditions, with snowpack water content overall reporting above normal,” says Angela Mills, NBMCA Water Resources Specialist. “A thick ice lens is present within the snowpack, formed during the late-December melt event and subsequent freezing rain.”
Snow water equivalence was measured at 60.3 mm at the three snow course locations.
Snow depth and water content are measured as part of the Conservation Authority’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Program.
