Battalion prospects thinned

The North Bay Battalion’s training camp saw nine players and three goaltenders depart Wednesday, leaving a total of 44 still listed in contention for roster spots with the Ontario Hockey League club.
Three veterans, in Mike McIvor, Charlie Larocque and Jack Lisson, were joined by Cole Vreugdenhil, a fifth-round pick in the OHL Priority Selection in April, as the surviving goaltenders after cuts were made following the first of the day’s two intrasquad games.
Twenty-five forwards and 15 defencemen remained in the battle to start the campaign with the Troops, including Russia’s Evgeny Dubrovtsev, a first-round pick in the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft in July. He finally got in the air after three flight delays in leaving St. Petersburg and was to be picked up at the Toronto airport Wednesday night.
Dubrovtsev, holdover Ihnat Pazii of Ukraine and Belarus’s Arseny Pronin, the Battalion’s second-round selection in the 2025 Import Draft, give the Troops three import forwards. Before this season, CHL teams were restricted to two imports.
Team White and Team Green split the games Wednesday. White defenceman Kent Greer made his camp debut in the nightcap after overcoming sickness, while Green was without Dubrovtsev and rearguard Declan Gallivan, who hasn’t appeared in a game while recovering from an illness.
Assistant coaches Bill Houlder and Matt Marquardt again ran the White and Green benches respectively while coach Ryan Oulahen watched the 60-minute games from the stands.
The camp ends after a fifth intrasquad game at 10 a.m. Thursday. Admission to Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens for the game is free.
