Burns played with the Troops in the 2002-03 season where he was named to the OHL First All-Rookie Team for his exceptional play recording 40 points in 68 games.
Burns was then selected in Round one of the 2003 NHL draft by the Minnesota Wild. Burns would go on to play 7 seasons with the Wild before being traded to the San Jose Sharks where he played 11 seasons, won the Norris trophy in 2016-17 and had 5 NHL All Star appearances.
Burns was then traded again in 2022 this time to the Carolina Hurricanes where he is currently in the pursuit of the Stanley Cup playing in the Eastern Conference finals.
