Back to university athletics, the Nipissing Lakers cross country running team is hosting the OUA championship this weekend.

17 universities are competing.

It’s the first time Nipissing has hosted the event, which takes place Saturday at Osprey Links Golf Course, with the Lakers aiming for a top 10 finish.

The men’s 8km race will begin at 11 am on the first fairway with the women’s 8 km race starting at noon.

Officials say an exciting downhill finish on the 18th fairway will thrill spectators as the athletes race for OUA gold.

“This event not only showcases elite-level endurance sport, but also the dedication and talent of student-athletes across Ontario. We are proud to welcome competitors, coaches, and spectators to North Bay,” says Graydon Raymer, Lakers head coach. “Osprey Links Golf Course is an incredible venue to host this race, and we look forward to some exciting races.”

The event is free for the public to attend and watch with spectators asked to use the Osprey Links Golf Course clubhouse parking lot, and not park along Cranberry Road.

Officials say the road needs to be kept open for buses and emergency vehicles.

The full list of teams competing includes Algoma, Brock, Guelph, Lakehead, Laurentian, McMaster, Nipissing, Ottawa, Queen’s, Toronto, TMU, Trent, Waterloo, Western, Windsor, Wilfred Laurier and York.

In the OCAA, both Canadore volleyball teams are home to Seneca on Saturday and Loyalist on Sunday.

The Panthers men's basketball team is on the road playing Lambton on Saturday and St Clair on Sunday.

In OUA hoops, the regular season starts this weekend for both Nipissing Lakers teams.

The men and women are both home to Toronto Metropolitan Friday night and the University of Toronto on Saturday.

In OUA men's hockey, Nipissing entertains Western on Friday and Saturday.

Both games start at 7 pm at Memorial Gardens.

The Nipissing women visit Windsor on Friday and Western on Saturday.

In the NOJHL, the Powassan Voodoos are home to French River Friday at 7 pm at the Sportsplex.

They also visit Kirkland Lake on Saturday.
