Busy weekend of events in North Bay
New residents and those looking to learn more about the city are being invited to the second annual ‘Welcome to North Bay’ event this weekend.
From 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Memorial Gardens, people will be able to connect with services, recreational clubs, places of worship, and social and volunteer opportunities.
A welcoming ceremony and cultural performances are also being held, plus there will be free kids’ activities.
“North Bay has always been a welcoming home for people from all walks of life,” says Mayor Peter Chirico. “Our second annual Welcome to North Bay event is a wonderful chance to come together and celebrate the diverse strengths and opportunities that make our community special.”
The event is being hosted by the City of North Bay in partnership with the North Bay and Area Local Immigration Partnership, and North Bay & District Chamber of Commerce (NBDCC).
“We are so pleased to come together to welcome new residents to our city and offer some connections to local organizations,” says Donna Backer, President & CEO of NBDCC.
The event is part of Welcoming Week 2024, a global initiative that runs Sept.13-22.
North Bay Pride is ready for a weekend of celebration, unity and pride.
After a flag raising Thursday afternoon (4 pm) at city hall, there’s the drag contest Friday night and a concert Saturday night, both at the Capitol Centre.
The March for Equity and Justice takes place at 2 pm Saturday afternoon.
The route starts at Worthington and Ferguson streets then travels along Main Street East to Regina Street.
An annual tradition continues at Nipissing University and Canadore College on Friday.
The 19th Welcome Back Pow Wow is taking place from 11 am to 3 pm at the Education Centre Pond.
It includes traditional drumming, dancing, vendors and more.
Local kids have the chance to “meet a machine’ on Saturday.
One Kids Place is hosting the 2nd Annual event.
From 10 am to 1:30 pm, children can touch, explore and get up close with different machines and vehicles.
The free event is at the MTO Government Building on McKeown Ave, with parking available at One Kids Place.
Among other things, there will be the Stuck on a Truck fundraiser, with proceeds supporting the children’s treatment centre.
If your child has always wanted to try ringette, here’s a chance to do so for free.
On Saturday, the West Ferris Ringette Association is hosting its annual ‘Come Try Ringette for Free’ event.
Online registration can be done at westferrisringette.ca/ctrff/ with the session taking place from 2-4 pm at Pete Palangio Arena.
After the event, participants can stay and watch the tryouts for the Nipissing Lakers Ringette University team.
For 44 years Canadians have been taking part in Terry Fox Runs for Cancer research and this weekend is no different.
North Bay’s run is taking place along the waterfront with registration starting at 830 at the Rotary Pavillion.

1,542 Allies, including 23 Canadian pilots, killed in the Battle of Britain will be remembered in North Bay this weekend.
A ceremony marking the 84th anniversary of the battle is taking place at 1 pm on Sunday at the Memorial Park Cenotaph.
It will include a flight from 22 Wing CFB North Bay, veterans and cadets.
