Bylaw passed redividing West Nipissing’s wards

Some residents in West Nipissing now have a new representative on council.

The municipality recently passed a bylaw redividing its eight wards.

Each of the wards will continue to be represented by one councillor with the mayor elected, at large, maintaining the current size of council at nine members.

With the motion passed, the municipality says anyone objecting to the bylaw has 45 days to make an appeal to Ontario Land Tribunal, offering up the reasons for objecting to it.

The fee is $1,100.

Officials say the review process focused on making minor adjustments to ward boundaries to ensure they are equitable and responsive to population growth, while maintaining communities of interest.

The original boundaries were put in place at amalgamation in 1999, with demographic shifts and population growth seen over the last couple of decades.
