Call to Rekindle Annuities Talks
The Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund is still waiting to hear back from the crown when it comes to the next phase of talks involving annuities.
This after the Supreme Court directed both Ontario and Canada in July to ‘act now to respect their treaty promises’.
Annuities haven’t increased beyond $4 per person since 1875.
Letters were sent to both the provincial and federal Indigenous Affairs ministers in August to rekindle the Council Fire, with the litigation fund saying neither has responded.
At a meeting earlier this month, on Manitoulin Island, the Chiefs and Trustees of the fund reaffirmed their commitment to Treaty renewal and again called upon Ontario and Canada to abide by the directives of the Supreme Court, to act now.
The Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850 includes 21 First Nations, including Dokis and Nipissing First Nation.
In January, a $10 Billion settlement involving past compensation was signed.
