Nancy Dewar-Stenning honoured for volunteer work with robotics

A local resident is a national volunteer award winner.

Callander’s Nancy Dewar-Stenning is one of 21 Canada Volunteer Award recipients, winning the Ontario regional Community Leader award.

Officials say she’s a dedicated mentor and community leader who has impacted hundreds of students through her work with robotics.

They say she not only did she create FIRST Team 1305 locally over 20 years ago but also started several other robotics teams across Canada, including those for Indigenous communities.

“Nancy’s work goes beyond just teaching robotics. She created the FIRST North Bay Robotics Event, which brings over 800 people to North Bay each year and contributes more than $1 million to the local economy,” states the federal Employment and Social Development Canada website.  “Nancy also volunteers with several local organizations and helps raise funds for various causes.”

This year’s local robotics competition takes place March 21-23 and will bring 32 teams to the city.

Three are coming from Michigan with the rest from across Ontario.

Over 300 nominations were received for the Canada Volunteer Awards this year.

Regional award recipients will get to choose a not-for-profit organization to receive a grant of $5,000 and will be honoured at a celebratory ceremony.
