Camper explosion deemed accidental
One person was injured after an explosion in a camping trailer in Sturgeon Falls on the weekend.
West Nipissing Fire Chief Frank Loeffen says crews responded to the KOA campground just before 6:30 pm on Saturday. “It’s accidental,” he says. “A propane leak inside the camper. The individual was working on his stove and when it ignited it blew the camper apart.”
Provincial police report a 65-year-old-person from the Montreal area was transported by paramedics to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Loeffen says there were no other injuries.
“The motor home to the left-hand side sustained some damage because of the explosion,” Loeffen says. “A pop-up trailer on the right-hand side also sustained damage as well as one other vehicle that was parked behind the motor home.”
He reminds people that ventilation is key when working with propane while the OPP reminds the public that propane is highly flammable.
"A leak or improper handling can lead to an explosion, which can cause severe injuries, property damage, or even fatalities," states an OPP release. "Always ensure propane tanks are stored and used in well-ventilated areas away from open flames or sparks."
