Canadore Panthers open 2024-2025 OCAA season with 1 win and 2 losses

The Canadore Panthers were at home on Saturday, October 19 with women’s volleyball, men’s basketball and men’s volleyball in the College Drive Gymnasium. Here’s a wrap-up of the day and a look at this weekend’s action on the road.

 The Canadore College men’s volleyball team claimed victory against Algonquin College with a final score of 3-1 in an exhilarating match. This win marks a strong start to the season for the Panthers.

The match began with a tightly contested first set where Canadore edged out Algonquin 25-22. Despite Canadore's efforts to rally back, Algonquin maintained momentum, winning the second set 25-14. Canadore fought back in the third set, claiming a 25-20 win, and sealing the match with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set.

Standout Performers for Canadore:

Canadore's defense was solid, as evidenced by their 52 digs which played a crucial role in countering Algonquin's attacks. The team's strong serving also helped maintain pressure, with a total of 3 service aces throughout the match.

 

The women's volleyball team faced a challenging match against Algonquin College, ultimately falling 3-0 in a hard-fought battle. Despite a spirited effort, the team struggled with consistency in their attacks, leading to set scores of 25-21, 27-25, and 25-16.

The first set saw a strong start from Canadore led by standout performances from outside hitter Calandra Bychyk and Emily Peltier. Bychyk recorded 5 kills while Peltier showcased her skills with an impressive .368 hitting percentage, contributing 8 kills throughout the match.

In a closely contested second set, the team rallied to keep the score tight, but ultimately fell short in a nail-biting finish. Setter Reece Sommerfeld played a pivotal role, providing 14 assists and maintaining a steady flow in the offense.

Defensively, libero Payton Smith was a highlight, racking up an impressive 21 digs and demonstrating her resilience on the court. The team's blocking efforts were led by middle blocker Sophie Hotte who recorded 4 total blocks.

In an exciting season opener, the Canadore College basketball team faced a tough challenge against Sheridan College, ultimately losing 99-88. The game showcased a spirited effort from the home team despite the final score.

Canadore came out strong, scoring 24 points in the first quarter, but Sheridan's early momentum proved difficult to overcome. The team fought hard throughout the match with standout performances from key players.

Key Players: 

Ty Huxtable led the charge for Canadore with 18 points and 9 assists.  Thomas Gowland also made significant contributions, scoring 16 points and showcasing his ability to penetrate the defense. Isaiah Nanton added 14 points, continuing to assert his presence in the paint.

Despite a strong offensive display, the team struggled with turnovers, giving up 22 to Sheridan which resulted in 24 points for the visitors. However, Canadore's strength showed as they outscored Sheridan in the fourth quarter, 26-20, highlighting their determination to compete until the final buzzer.

Canadore’s bench also played a vital role, contributing 50 points to the total which speaks to the depth of talent on the team.

The Panthers women’s volleyball plays Seneca, game time 1:00 p.m. The Panther Men’s Volleyball, also at Seneca, with the game beginning at 3:00 p.m.

The Panthers men’s basketball team will take on Lambton at 6:00 p.m. 

 

Sunday, October 27

The Panthers women’s volleyball plays Loyalist at 1: 00 p.m.

The Panthers men’s volleyball plays Loyalist at 3:00 p.m.

The Panthers men’s basketball is at St. Clair at 1:00 p.m.
