CAO of West Nipissing’s last day at the helm is Friday

A quarter century of administrative leadership wraps up this week in West Nipissing.

The Municipality has announced Chief Administrative Officer Jay Barbeau, hired in September 2000, will be officially departing from the role on Friday, Oct. 10. His retirement was announced earlier this year.

“I’ve met some wonderful people over my 40-year career,” says Barbeau. “Thank you to the community of West Nipissing for allowing me to serve them for the past 25. I’d also like to thank the many councils for their contributions. Most of all, my appreciation goes to the staff, the true champions. They show up every day with professionalism and purpose for the community. West Nipissing is well served.”

Officials say a leadership transition has been agreed to in advance of the arrival of newly appointed CAO Mike Pilon on Nov. 10, with senior staff to work with Council to ensure continuity of operations.

They say Barbeau will remain available in an advisory capacity during the transition.

“On behalf of Council and the Municipality of West Nipissing, I would like to thank Jay for his 25 years of dedicated service as Chief Administrative Officer,” says Mayor Kathleen Thorne Rochon. “Jay has provided consistent leadership and has played a key role in the development and progress of our community. You don’t need to look hard to see his legacy. His professionalism and commitment to public service have been greatly valued. We wish him the very best in his retirement.”

The municipality says Barbeau guided the community through many challenges over the past 25 years, including major economic shifts, floods, fires, a pandemic, legal disputes, and a transition in policing services.

His future plans include continuing to serve as President of the Laurentian Board of Governors and spending more time with family.
