Carbon Monoxide alarm regulations are changing

Carbon Monoxide alarm regulations are changing

Attention multi-unit residential building owners & property managers: carbon monoxide (CO) alarm regulations are changing effective Jan. 1, 2026.

Starting in the new year, CO alarms are required not just near sleeping areas, but also on every storey of a unit, even those without a sleeping area. CO alarms are also required in public corridors if the corridor is heated by air from a fuel-burning appliance and in service rooms with fuel-burning appliances.

These regulations now also apply to units that are heated by air from a fuel-burning appliance not contained within the suite.

Building owners & landlords are responsible for installing and maintaining these alarms in all required locations, including individual rental suites.
