CEC facing ‘real financial crisis’

The first of several fundraisers to help restart the Canadian Ecology Centre is lined up for a couple of weeks from now.
Officials say the environmental and outdoor education centre, which has been closed since the devastating storm last June, is now facing a deficit of $300,000.
It’s slated to reopen on May 8, with Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park.
We are facing a real financial crisis,” says Bill Steer, General Manager and founder. “That is why we have initiated the SAVE the CEC Campaign. Many people think we are government funded, not so. As a non-profit the accrued operating costs have added up, the contingency has been used up during our closure. We’ve been waiting for Ontario Parks to tell the CEC about its future. This has hampered the planning of programs and contacting education and other clients.”
The ninth annual Earth Day Book Talk will be held on Saturday, April 18 at West Ferris Secondary School.
“We are excited to bring Waubgeshig Rice and Adam Shoalts, two bestselling Canadian authors, to the ninth annual book talk,” says Steer. “We are appealing to community members, near and afar, to purchase tickets for this Earth Day event or donate to the CEC registered charity.”
