CF-18s intercept plane over restricted airspace in Alberta

By Richard Coffin

The RCMP says NORAD deployed fighter jets to intercept a private, fixed-wing, civilian airplane that violated air restrictions above Kananaskis, Alberta.

That’s where the G-7 Summit is taking place.

In a release, the RCMP says a non-compliant plane entered restricted airspace Sunday morning just after 11 am, which met the criteria for a tactical response.

NORAD deployed the CF-18 jets with multiple steps taken to get the pilot’s attention.

Police say final warning measures were used, which can include flares, to contact the pilot and have them safely land under their own power.

Officials continue to investigate the incident.
