Chisholm declares state of emergency, flood watch in West Nipissing

By Richard Coffin

A state of emergency has been declared by the Township of Chisholm.

It’s due to severe flooding across the township.

“Approximately one-quarter of the impacted area is underwater, and water levels continue to rise as snowmelt from Algonquin Park combines with significant rainfall,” reads a post on social media.

Road closures include:
– Memorial Park Drive (between Beach and Golf Course)
– Beach Road (Memorial to Beach)
– Chiswick Line (between Kells and Beach Rd)

Officials say flooding is affecting roads, properties, and critical services.

They ask residents to stay alert and follow municipal updates as the situation evolves.

In West Nipissing and surrounding area, the municipality says a Flood Watch is in effect, as issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources.

“The region has seen significant rainfall over the past several days, with rain continuing today and more expected on Saturday,” states a release. “Water levels and flows across the district are rising due to rainfall, snowmelt, and runoff. Lake and river ice conditions are deteriorating and are considered unsafe in most areas.”

The municipality says it has not declared an emergency at this time, but remains actively engaged in monitoring conditions and responding as needed.

Officials say Public Works crews are conducting daily patrols to assess conditions and address problem areas, including road washouts and drainage concerns.

They add the municipality is not in a position to supply sandbags and advises property owners in low-lying or flood-prone areas to take appropriate protective measures, rather than waiting until conditions worsen.
