City Fire Crews called to Trillium Drive House

City Fire Crews called to Trillium Drive House

By Richard Coffin

A homeowner has been charged with failing to maintain smoke alarms after a house fire on Trillium Drive earlier this week.

City fire crews responded just after 11 am on Dec. 29.

Deputy fire chief Greg Saunders says the kitchen area of the home was fully engulfed in flames when fire fighters arrived on the scene.

He says they got inside and quickly extinguished the fire.

“One person was home at the time of the fire and suffered some burns trying to extinguish the fire herself,’ says Saunders, in a release. “She was treated on scene by paramedics.”

He says there was significant fire and smoke damage to the home, with the cause being investigated.

Saunders says the smoke alarms had been removed for renovations to the home.

“This is not an acceptable practice and against the law,” he says.

Saunders adds removing smoke alarms leaves residents unprotected and vulnerable in the event of an emergency.
