City of North Bay named a 2023 Leader in Sustainability
The City of North Bay is pleased to announce that it has been named by Call2Recycle Canada, Inc. as a 2023 Leader in Sustainability.
The Leader in Sustainability Award is granted each year to organizations that display exceptional commitment to battery recycling. This is the second time in as many years that the City has earned this distinction.
In 2021, North Bay was recognized as one of the program’s top-performing partners for the collection that year of 6,573 kilograms of household batteries. In 2023, the City more than doubled that figure, collecting 13,352 kilograms of batteries, contributing to a record-breaking year at Call2Recycle, which reports that nearly six million kilograms of batteries were diverted from Canadian landfills.
“Each year, Canadians recycle more and more of their used batteries with Call2Recycle thanks to the ongoing partnership of organizations like the City of North Bay. This partnership speaks to a real commitment to sustainability and makes a significant difference,” said Joe Zenobio, President of Call2Recycle Canada, Inc. “The support we receive from the City of North Bay helps us achieve our mission of maximizing battery diversion from the waste stream, which in turn protects wildlife, the environment and our communities.”
The City of North Bay has been collecting and shipping batteries for recycling through its Household Hazardous Waste Depot on Patton Street for approximately 20 years.
"We're thrilled to be recognized as a sustainability leader, and a big shout-out to our residents for making it happen,” said Coun. Lana Mitchell, Chair of Infrastructure and Operations. “As a City, we remain committed to supporting programs that reduce harm to the environment and increase recycling — thanks for your participation."
