City police encourage drivers to be ready for winter weather
With the change in the weather, police are reminding motorists to prepare their vehicles for winter and adjust their driving habits.
The North Bay Police Service says along with installing winter tires, don’t forget to remove ice and snow from your windows, mirrors, lights and roof, slow down and give extra space between vehicles, avoid sudden braking and accelerating, and keep your attention on the road.
“Taking the time to prepare your vehicle and adjust your driving can prevent collisions and keep everyone on the road safer,” says Acting Inspector Jody deHaas of the North Bay Police Service. “If road conditions are poor, slow down or wait until it’s safe to travel. A few extra minutes can make all the difference in getting to your destination safely.”
Winter Driving Safety:
- Check driving conditions: Use Ontario 511 before you leave and consider delaying your trip if conditions are poor.
- Clear your vehicle: Remove ice and snow from all windows, mirrors, lights, and roof.
- Drive cautiously: Slow down, give extra space between vehicles, and avoid using cruise control; stopping distances increase on slippery roads.
- Steer carefully: Avoid sudden braking, acceleration, or sharp turns.
- Stay focused: Keep your attention on the road and minimize distractions. Watch for shaded areas, bridges, and overpasses that freeze earlier than other sections of the road.
- Use your lights: Turn on full vehicle lighting in poor visibility, and pull over safely if needed.
Be Prepared for an Emergency: Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including:
- Blanket
- Flashlight
- First aid kit
- Booster cables
- Extra windshield washer fluid
