The well-being of North Bay Police officers and employees is the focus of a new initiative being undertaken by the service.

Four part-time volunteer police chaplains, from various faith backgrounds, have been sworn in.

“Our members face immense challenges every day and it is our responsibility to ensure they are supported – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually,” says Police Chief Daryl Longworth. “That’s why we’ve expanded our wellness supports to include our new Chaplaincy program. Our volunteer Police Chaplains will become part of our policing family, offering compassionate support during times of crisis or simply offering a listening ear and friendship on a particularly bad day.”

Officials say police chaplains are in a unique position to listen to police members with empathy and offer advice, and assistance when appropriate. “My role as a volunteer chaplain is to walk alongside our officers and support staff, supporting their well-being in every area of life,” says Pastor Matthew Laker.  “I’m sure I will learn from them, and I look forward to the journey ahead.”

Along with Pastor Laker, the police chaplains are Deacon Tim Foster, Zkabewis (meaning helper) George Couchie and Pastor Daniel Clarke.
