Club wants new Pickleball Courts locked at night
The North Bay Pickleball Club is concerned about vandals and wants the city to lock up the new Bourke Park courts at night.
The club’s Chris Derochie questions why they would be left open, noting the city has invested $111,000 into the courts, including a delicate latex and sand surface.
“You treat Omischl field in which it is locked and protected,” he says. “We would like [the courts] locked and protected. A video camera does nothing these days.”
Derochie says the problem will be at night as the club will have block programming at the courts from 9 am to 9 pm.
“We propose opening the gates at 8:30 am and locking them in the evening when we leave at 9 pm,” he says. “Vandals come in the middle of the night.”
The call comes as Pickleball continues to gain popularity.
“I started the Y program, and they had 50 players playing. I now have 250 pickleball players at the Y,” Derochie says. “It’s exploding. It’s amazing. We’ve got an amazing surface. Let’s protect it.”
It’s expected he’ll continue discussions with city staff about his concerns.
The focus of Tuesday’s public meeting was a $16 user fee, for three hours of use of two courts, which Derochie says they welcome.
A council committee approved the fee, which now goes to council for another vote.
