Coalition aims to purchase RYAM’s Témiscaming mill

By Richard Coffin

A Canadian coalition of local managers, unionized workers and First Nations is working towards purchasing RYAM’s Témiscaming mill.

Officials say they’re looking to secure the future of the mill’s operations and protect the jobs that support families across the region.

“The future of our mills should not be decided far from the communities that keep them running,” says Unifor National President Lana Payne. “This initiative offers a path to Canadian ownership, with local partners who have a direct stake in the company’s long-term success. Unifor supports this effort.”

In late August, RYAM announced much of the plant, which produced high-purity cellulose, high-yield pulp, and coated paperboard,  would be temporarily shut down due to the impact of U.S. tariffs.

The coalition says by bringing together people with a direct stake in the mill’s future, it’s developing a locally driven solution and exploring what is needed to restart operations.

“Our members know this mill and want to keep working here,” says Unifor Local 233 President Stéphane Lefebvre. “Their experience must help shape a strong plan to restart operations, with the goal of also giving future generations the opportunity to build a future in Témiscaming. There is still work ahead, but we are ready to do our part.”

The union adds the initiative is reminiscent of a defining chapter in Témiscaming’s history.

They say after the mill was closed in 1972, workers, former managers and community members came together the following year to purchase and reopen it under the Tembec name.

Further details on next steps will be shared as discussions progress.
