Cohabitation Model helps address Affordable Housing Needs
It’s being billed as an innovative solution to address affordable housing needs in North Bay.
The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) and Canadore College are partnering to introduce a cohabitation tenancy model at 681 Commercial Street.
Officials say the goal is to provide affordable housing solutions for older adults through innovative living arrangements.
The initiative allows two people to share a two-bedroom apartment, each with their own room while sharing common areas.
“We’re thrilled about this collaboration with Canadore College,” says Mark King, DNSSAB Chair. “It’s a perfect example of how we’re thinking outside the box to create sustainable housing solutions that truly benefit our community. This cohabitation model does more than just provide affordable housing – it fosters companionship and a sense of security for our older residents.”
39 of the 61 units in the former health unit building are ready for occupancy with an additional 22 units available starting in May.
The units will be incorporated into Canadore College’s Village model and will include a variety of health and wellness services.
“Multigenerational housing is a key component to healthy communities and healthy aging,” says George Burton, Canadore College President and CEO. “This endeavour is supported by Canadore’s guiding pillars, specifically ‘connection to community’ and ‘program and service excellence’. Not only does this initiative provide housing in a unique model, but it also expands the applied learning opportunities for our students.”
In terms of occupancy, priority is being given to those on the subsidized housing wait list and the Coordinated Access Nipissing Prioritization List.
