Construction Scams Targeting North Bay Residents

The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) is warning residents to be cautious when hiring contractors following reports of construction-related frauds and scams in our community.

A recent investigation has revealed an incident where a local victim paid a $12,000 cash deposit to a company posing as a legitimate roofer. The suspect removed the home’s shingles and then abandoned the project, leaving the roof exposed and the property damaged. The homeowner incurred additional charges by having to hire a replacement contractor to repair the damage and complete the project.

Scammers have been posing as asphalt pavers, roofers, and home maintenance workers, often going door-to-door or leaving flyers in mailboxes offering “special deals” for cash. In some cases, these individuals also advertise through websites or social media accounts that appear legitimate but use stolen identities or fabricated information.

These individuals typically use high-pressure sales tactics to secure immediate or upfront payment, usually in cash, before doing any work. Victims often find that the final cost is much higher than originally quoted, and the work is either poorly done or never completed. Some victims have reported being threatened or intimidated when they questioned the work or refused to pay more.

Tips to Protect Yourself from Contractor Scams:

  • Get referrals from friends, family, or call trusted business associations, such as the local Chamber of Commerce.
  • Ask for proof of licensing, liability insurance, and WSIB coverage.
  • Always compare 2–3 detailed, written quotes.
  • Contact recent clients and ask to see completed work.
  • Sign a contract with the scope, cost, and timelines outlined in writing.
  • Limit upfront payments. A small deposit is normal; avoid paying everything upfront.
  • Watch for red flags, such as pressure tactics, vague details, or no business address.
  • Make sure the contractor handles all required permits.
  • Use secure and traceable payment methods; avoid paying cash.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, walk away or get a second opinion.

NBPS encourages the public to report suspicious activity and remain alert. If you believe you’ve been a victim of a contractor scam, please call 705-497-5555 (option 5) to speak with an officer. Your assistance is appreciated and can make a meaningful difference in ongoing investigations.
