Dec. 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, with a local ceremony taking place on Friday.

Nipissing University, the Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) and Amelia Rising are inviting the community to remember, reflect, and recommit to ending gender-based violence.

The ceremony takes place on Friday at 10:45 am in Nipissing’s Small Cafeteria (Room A246).

Officials will honour the 14 women whose lives were taken at École Polytechnique in 1989, and all women, girls, and gender-diverse people whose lives have been lost due to gender-based violence in Canada.

“Nipissing University is committed to ensuring a safe campus and workplace for all staff, faculty, and students,” says Dr. Kevin Wamsley, President and Vice-Chancellor at Nipissing University. “Please join us for this important gathering where we reaffirm our commitment to addressing gender-based violence and our support for survivors.”

Anyone experiencing gender-based violence or looking to support someone who is in crisis can contact Amelia Rising’s 24-hour Crisis Line at 705-476-3355.
