Cubs drop Bearcats to hit win column at Centennial Cup
A pair of Lincoln Moore goals, along with quality goaltending from Iain Wintle, led the Greater Sudbury Cubs to a 4-1 victory over the Truro Bearcats (MHL) Friday in Day 2 play at the Centennial Cup, presents by Tim Hortons, at Credit Union Place.
A fast-paced start to the contest saw the Cubs open the scoring just over six minutes in when Alex Valade led a rush into the Bearcats zone and later fired a feed through the crease that Moore quickly pumped past Truro netminder Louca Connolly.
A stellar blocker save by Connolly moments later saw him deny Greater Sudbury’s Mason Walker with a point-blank stop off a two-man break with Briir Long.
Remaining 1-0 Cubs into the second stanza, they extended their lead off a draw midway through the proceedings when Owen King sent a pass across to Spencer Horgan in the right circle that he fired to the net that Connolly could only get a piece of, before it trickled in.
Another chance after that, Greater Sudbury captain Daks Klinkhammer was denied on a shorthanded breakaway.
A highlight reel effort by Bearcats’ forward Jake Todd saw him put his side on the board deep in the frame after his rush up-ice saw him split the Cubs’ defence, then knock his chance through the legs of Wintle at 16:23.
Heading to the third period in the affair, the NOJHL title holders used some intense pressure during a man advantage to extend their cushion and saw Moore hammer in a one-time blast from a sharp angle in deep after being teed up by Tyson Rismond from the right point.
Adding some insurance just after being denied on an in alone opportunity, Noah Kohan chipped in a loose puck bouncing near the crease with 8:43 to go to round out the scoring and see Greater Sudbury improve to 1-1-0 at the 10-team event.
Collecting player of the game recognition in the match-up were Wintle and Truro’s Drew Kiever.
Up next for the Cubs will be an 11 a.m. ET encounter with the 0-1-0 Flin Flon Bombers (SJHL) Monday.
