DIA Strongly Opposed to Warming Centre in Downtown Core
Report North Bay has learned the DIA has written to the Board of DNSSAB regarding the recommendation of moving the centre downtown. The City of North Bay has a majority of the Board seats on DNSSAB made of the Mayor and City Councilors.
It is clear the DIA strongly disagrees with this recommendation and believes further public consultation and metrics need to be reviewed in order to make the best decision for our community as a whole.
They go on to state, "Locating a permanent warming centre within the downtown core increases the concentration of mental health and addiction services in our membership, going against our mandate as a BIA. A BIA, (Business Improvement Area) is an association of commercial property owners and tenants within a defined area who work in partnership with the City to create thriving, competitive, and safe business areas that attract shoppers, diners, tourists, and new business" according to the source.
Were the Downtown Businesses consulted?
The DIA also noted "It's concerning that consultants have overlooked seeking input from both the business community and the municipality's Economic Development department regarding the potential impact of this decision on businesses.
Report North Bay is asking for a response from the Chair (councilor Mark King) of DNSSAB and Mayor Chirico if this was the case.
This is a developing story.
