Education Minister fires general contractor from new Parry Sound school project
A new general contractor is needed for the new Parry Sound JK-12 school and childcare facility.
This after Education Minister Paul Callandra terminated the contract of the now-former general contractor.
In a letter to parents, the Near North District School Board says the decision was made after an extensive review, including formal notices of default and opportunity for the contractor to resolve outstanding concerns.
The termination notice referenced several concerns, including:
- The absence of a reliable and regularly updated construction schedule
- The performance of work in accordance with the contract documents
- The prompt correction of defective work and deficiencies
- The registration of numerous construction liens against the project
Officials say the board determined continuing under the existing arrangement would place the project’s successful completion and timeline at risk.
NNDSB has regained full control of the project and remains committed to delivering the state-of-the-art school safely and on target for opening in September.
“We will secure a new general contractor and maintain close oversight of the project to support a smooth transition and minimize disruption,” states the letter.
Officials say further updates will follow as they transition to a new construction team.
