Feds boost Affordable Housing in North Bay

MP Anthony Rota announced $10.6 million through the Housing Accelerator Fund to eliminate barriers to building much-needed affordable housing, faster.
Federal support is helping the City of North Bay accelerate the construction of 337 new homes over the next three years.
“Housing in North Bay needs that boost and this is going where it’s needed most,” he says. “It’s going to the people that need the help, it’s not going across the board. It’s specifically there for people who need it.”
With over 1,400 people waiting for affordable housing, Mayor Peter Chirico says it’s going to take partnerships with the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) and private developers to reach the target.
He says they have a number of shovel-ready projects.
“Whether they be additional dwelling units on residential property all the way through to DNSSAB that have a number of shovel-ready projects to get out into the market and try to reduce that waiting list for seniors, affordable housing and rent-geared-to-income,” Chirico says.
The city’s Action Plan involves seven local initiatives with incentives, like reducing fees for affordable housing developments, and city land being made available for affordable housing projects.
Officials say it will also reduce approval timelines by streamlining processes, introducing e-permitting and providing additional staff for service support.
