The cause of Monday evening’s house fire on the 1000 block of Main Street West is being attributed to improper disposal of smoking material.

That from Fire Chief Jason Whiteley who says damage is estimated at $500,000.

He adds one firefighter was taken to hospital as a precaution due to extreme heat stress symptoms, has been released and is back at work.

Along with thanking the police and paramedics, Whiteley is thanking the person who stopped and alerted the homeowners of the fire.

“Her actions allowed the family to self-evacuate prior to our arrival,” he says, in a release.

However, he has concerns about drivers and their ‘total disregard’ for the safety of emergency personnel working on the scene.

“We had drivers trying to drive through the emergency work zone and driving over hoses,” Whiteley says. “This creates additional safety concerns for fire crews who are concentrating on the required assignments to put out the fire.”
