Firefighters respond to fire at Merrick Landfill

The landfill is currently closed

Firefighters responded to a fire at the Merrick Landfill this morning.

Greg Saunders, deputy fire chief, says firefighters from station one and two responded at 7:00 a.m. this morning.

Saunders says the heaviest fire has been extinguished but crews will remain on site for much of the day to make sure the fire is fully extinguished.

The landfill is currently closed, and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
