First Responders Trade Manicures for Pancakes

The annual first responder fundraising challenge for CIBC’s Run for the Cure is getting a new look this year with pink aprons, pancakes and a little friendly competition.

The Anishinabek Police Service, North Bay Fire and Emergency Services, 22 Wing Military Police Detachment North Bay and North Bay Police Service are once again going head-to-head to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness. The challenge begins today and runs until October 31, 2026.

The annual challenge pits the local emergency response teams against one another, with bragging rights on the line, and a unique consequence for the leadership of the service that raises the least.

This year, leaders from the service who raises the least amount of funds, will put on pink aprons and serve pancakes to the other participating services.

In 2025, the participating emergency services collectively raised $4,550. Since the challenge began in 2021, local first responders have raised $27,900 for the cause.

This year, the teams are hoping to meet or exceed last year’s total while helping support CIBC’s Run for the Cure and its efforts to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer.

“We’ve been told the other teams are coming for us this year, but we’re not planning on giving up the title, or the bragging rights, without a fight,” said A/Deputy Jeff Warner. “We’re happy to put on the pink aprons and serve pancakes if we have to, but after two straight wins, we’d much rather be enjoying the pancakes. Most importantly, we’re all here to raise money for a great cause, and we’re hoping this year’s competition is our biggest one yet.”
