The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) says the Canada Nickel Crawford mine project is the kind of nation-building investment our region has been calling for.

It was designated to the federal Major Projects Office last week.

FONOM says that’s an important milestone that recognizes the national significance of the Timmins area project and its potential to drive economic growth and clean energy development in Northern Ontario.

“Northern Ontario has a central role to play in supplying the critical minerals needed for electric vehicles, clean technology, and national security,” said Dave Plourde, President of FONOM. “This referral gives the project the coordination and certainty required to move forward responsibly and competitively.”

Canada Nickel says the mine will strengthen Canada’s supply of clean, high-grade nickel for batteries and steel, create thousands of good-paying jobs and support many others in surrounding communities and industries.

“The Crawford Project brings together economic development, environmental innovation, and meaningful partnerships with First Nations,” says Plourde. “It represents thousands of potential jobs for Northern families and will help strengthen Canada’s position as a global leader in the low-carbon economy.”

Meantime, FONOM is also calling on the federal government to ensure its upcoming multi-billion-dollar VIA Rail fleet procurement prioritizes Canadian workers, manufacturing, and supply chains.

“This is an opportunity to invest in our country, our people, and our long-standing industrial strengths,” says Plourde. “Northern Ontario has the talent, capability, and history of delivering for Canada. Now is the time to keep these investments at home.”

FONOM is also encouraging the province to advocate directly to the Prime Minister and federal cabinet to ensure that Canadian-made expertise is central to VIA Rail’s new fleet decision.
