Friendship Circle Program Celebrates Rejuvenation and Community Impact
Friendship Circle, a program dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals living with dementia and their care partners, has relaunched with tremendous success following a grant opportunity from the RTOERO Foundation in 2023. Originally established in 2018, the program temporarily paused during the COVID-19 pandemic but has now resumed its mission to create inclusive and supportive environments for its participants.
Elana, a dedicated staff member from the Alzheimer Society, expressed the profound impact of Friendship Circle, stating, "Friendship Circle has been a joy for everyone involved! It provides individuals living with dementia and their care partners an opportunity to participate in activities in a dementia-friendly environment with friends on similar journeys and staff who are eager to ensure that everyone has the best experience possible."
Participants Clayton and Daphne echoed this sentiment, highlighting the program's importance in fostering genuine connections and enjoyable experiences. "These events are FUN," they shared. "There are always good laughs and fellowship. It's a great experience to meet other spouses with their partners living with dementia." The program, designed to combat social isolation and the stigma associated with dementia, has successfully hosted numerous activities across communities it serves, including visits to Maple Hill Farms in Hanmer, Leisure Farms in Sturgeon Falls, and the Chief Commanda in North Bay.
According to recent studies, adults over 50 years of age face increased risks of stroke, coronary heart disease, and dementia due to social isolation. Friendship Circle aims to mitigate these risks by providing a supportive network that celebrates individuals for who they are, beyond their diagnoses. Despite its success, the program faces funding challenges as current grants come to an end.
The Alzheimer Society is committed to securing additional resources to sustain this vital program. "The smiles on the participants' faces are priceless," noted Elana, "as is the laughter and fellowship that everyone enjoys." We invite the community to support the Friendship Circle's mission.
Your contributions can help ensure that this invaluable program continues to provide joy, companionship, and a sense of belonging to those who need it most. For more information on Friendship Circle and how to support its mission, please visit https://alzheimer.ca/sudburymanitoulin/en
