GAREAU, Sophia
Passed away peacefully at Cassellholme Home for the Aged on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the age of 78. Beloved mother of Amy Gareau and Alanna Norman (Don). Loving Grandma of Meghan and Liam, and cherished Gma to Ocean (Chris), Malakai, Quest, and Marley. Sophia is survived by her siblings Andrew Tass (Cheryl), Rick Tass (Renee), and Mary Urie (Gary). She was predeceased by her parents, Tedeusz and Barbara Tass.
Sophia was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose kindness, strength, and unwavering love for her family will be deeply missed. She found great joy in spending time with those she loved and treasured every opportunity to create lasting memories with her children and grandchildren.
As a young girl, Sophia immigrated to Canada with her parents, Tedeusz and Barbara Tass, settling first in Sudbury, Ontario. The family later moved to Oshawa, where Sophia attended Oshawa Collegiate and Vocational Institute and was crowned Miss Polonia in 1966. She eventually made her home in North Bay, Ontario, where she raised her two beloved daughters.
Sophia's compassion for others led her to a successful and rewarding career in social services. She dedicated many years to serving her community through the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services, retiring in 2007 as a manager. In retirement, Sophia devoted much of her time to her daughters and grandchildren, enjoyed socializing with her many close friends, and was a proud and active member of the Catholic Women's League at St. Alphonsus Parish in Astorville.
Those who knew Sophia will remember her generous and selfless nature. She was warm, funny, and exceptionally social. Her wit was always sharp, her sense of humour perfectly timed, and her laughter truly unforgettable. Sophia had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcome, valued, and cared for, and her presence brought joy to countless lives.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Cassellholme for the compassionate care and support provided to Sophia during her time there. A special thank you is extended to Samantha and the staff at Hillside Funeral Services for their kindness, guidance, and professionalism during this difficult time; to Father Francis for his spiritual care and support; and to the 9:00 a.m. choir of St. Peter the Apostle Church for sharing their gift of music in celebration of Sophia's life.
The family would also like to express their deepest appreciation to Sophia's dear friend, Nancy, whose steadfast friendship and regular visits brought comfort, companionship, and joy. Nancy's devotion was especially evident when she helped Sophia celebrate her final birthday by getting her out of her room and making the day truly special—a kindness that will always be remembered and cherished.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Hillside Funeral Services, 362 Airport Road, on Monday, June 8, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter the Apostle Church, 299 Airport Road, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 11:30 a.m.
