Halloween Safety Share
Halloween is a night for fun, treats, and spooky costumes, but safety should always come first. The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) wants everyone to enjoy the night without accidents or scares.
Top Tips for Trick-or-Treaters & Parents:
- Stick together: Younger children should always go with a parent or guardian. Older kids should plan a route and set a clear curfew.
- Be visible: Choose bright costumes or add reflective tape or glow sticks so drivers can see you.
- Stay aware: Avoid masks or glasses that block your vision. Always look both ways before crossing streets, and use crosswalks.
- Well-lit areas only: Stick to well-lit areas and houses with lights on, and never enter a stranger’s home or car.
- Check treats: Examine candy before eating. Throw away anything damaged or unwrapped. Avoid homemade treats from strangers.
Important Tips for Drivers:
- Halloween streets are busy with children, be extra alert, slow down, and expect the unexpected.
- Excited children may run into the road or cross between parked cars, take it slow and anticipate sudden movement.
- Distracted, aggressive, and impaired driving are extra dangerous on Halloween: Keep phones away, take it slow, focus on the road, and never drive under the influence. Plan a safe ride home with a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare.
Trick-or-treaters are welcome at the NBPS after 5:00 p.m. Stop by HQ for a treat! NBPS will be handing out goody bags, while supplies last, and kids can visit K9 Chewie, the Trauma Support Dog from Victim Services of Nipissing District.
NBPS members will be out on patrol, please ask for help if you need it. Let’s all do our part to keep the community safe this Halloween by watching out for one another and reporting anything suspicious.
