Handrail installation starts Monday

Handrail installation starts Monday

By Richard Coffin
Temporary barricades will soon be replaced with hand railings on the 100 block of Main West.

The city says work starts Monday morning and is expected to take about two weeks to complete.

Crews will be on-site from 7 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

Traffic may also be impacted briefly when railings are being unloaded.

“Drivers are advised to be mindful of workers and follow traffic control personnel as needed,” states a release from the city.  “The sidewalk will remain open throughout the project.”

Officials say the work will be confined to the boulevard, and efforts will be made to ensure that either the stairs or ramps remain accessible to the public while work is being completed in those areas.

It’s one of the final pieces to the nearly $9 million Making Over Main Street project, which saw the reconstruction of above-ground infrastructure like roads, curbs, crosswalks and more.

Work was done in phases between Sherbrooke and Cassells streets and began in May 2023.

It’s the first major rehabilitation of Main Street in 40 years.
