Healthcare issues top of mind for FONOM
The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities is focusing on a few healthcare related concerns.
FONOM held its board meeting last week in Callander.
A number of member municipalities are concerned about a lack of dialogue between the Minister of Health and Hope Air’s request for multiyear provincial funding.
They supported a resolution calling for the medical travel assistance program to continue for residents of Northern Ontario.
Other discussions focused on doctor and nurse recruitment challenges in the region and concern about the future of Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto.
FONOM says the airport's proximity to downtown Toronto benefits work, travel, and tourism but is also critical for accessing medical services.
A letter of support for the airport has been sent to the federal transport minister and the mayor of Toronto.
Other discussions centered on legislative amendments to improve the Municipal Code of Conduct and enforcement and the roles of Municipal Integrity Commissioners.
FONOM is also interested in hearing the results of a municipal services group’s Water and Wastewater Utility Feasibility Study, with the hope that the work will help members with their infrastructure deficit.
