Heavy smoke but no injuries after apartment fire

There were no injuries after city fire crews were called to a fire in an apartment building on the 400 block of Main Street East Thursday night.
Platoon Chief Tom Heppenstall says three stations responded to a fire alarm activation call, with smoke and flame visible.
“The first station got here and reported heavy smoke in the hallway and coming out of the windows. They made entry and fought fire,” he says. “It’s out now but there was a lot of contents in the apartment. Unsure of the cause yet. It appears to be in a couch. Not electrical or anything like that but there’s a lot of material in there making it very stubborn.”
He says like any fire, challenges with an apartment building fire include communication and scene security.

“Keeping people out and getting people out because there’s a window of when it’s good to get out or when it’s best to stay, the ‘fight or flight’ thing,” Heppenstall says. “But really given the time of day, we were here quickly, it’s all contained to one [apartment]. There will be smoke damage on the second floor. This is about as good as an apartment building fire you can have. No one is hurt.”
Fire crews were dispatched to the five-storey building at about 6:20 pm Thursday.
Main Street East between Fisher and Regina streets was closed while crews were working on the scene.
