Help Prevent Cancer. Get the HPV Vaccine
March marks HPV Awareness Month, a time to highlight the important benefits of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine—the only vaccine proven to help prevent several types of cancer. HPV is extremely common, with up to 75 per cent of Canadians likely to contract it at some point in their lives.
Free HPV Vaccines for Grade 7–12 Students
In Ontario, the HPV vaccine is free for all students starting in Grade 7, with eligibility extending through the end of Grade 12. This applies to all genders, and the vaccine provides strong protection against cancers of the cervix, head and neck, anus, penis, vulva and vagina, as well as genital warts.
Research shows the vaccine is most effective when given at a young age—ideally around age 11 or 12, before exposure to the virus begins.
For Those No Longer in School
If you are no longer in school, you can still receive the HPV vaccine. It can be purchased privately, and many private health insurance plans provide coverage for the vaccine cost.
Why HPV Vaccination Matters
HPV is linked to several forms of cancer, and vaccination dramatically lowers the risk. The publicly funded HPV9 vaccine protects against nine high-risk HPV types responsible for most HPV-related cancers and genital warts.
Throughout March, residents may notice online video campaigns across the Nipissing and Parry Sound districts promoting HPV awareness, the importance of vaccination, and how to stay protected. These videos aim to encourage informed decisions and increase vaccine uptake among youth and young adults, while providing important information to parents/ guardians.
