Hugh Stickle

Hugh Stickle

With deep sadness the family of Hugh Carl Stickle announce his passing in North Bay, Ontario on September 16, 2026.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Claudette (Corbeil); his three children Carolyn (John), Paul (Betty) and Charles (Leslie); four grandchildren Jennifer (Peter), Jessica (Andrew), Carley (Cody) and Megan (Ian). There was a special sparkle in his eye for his six great-grandchildren.

He was born on April 18, 1937 in Calgary, Alberta; the eldest of five children. After graduating high school in Edmonton, he joined the Air Force Reserve in 1954. By 1958 he was a Navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was transferred to North Bay. The CF-100 on display in Lee Park on Memorial Drive was last flown by Flight Lt. Len Burt and Flight Officer Hugh Stickle.

He left the Airforce and began a 28-year science teaching career at Widdifield Secondary School in the fall of 1968. In 1972, during his teaching career, he joined the Algonquin Regiment in North Bay, taking command in 1978. Eventually he moved on to District Headquarters. Then came back and took command of the 26 Service Battalion. In the early 90s, he took command of the Northern Ontario Militia District, retiring from the military a few years later as a full colonel.

He enjoyed reading, hunting, travelling and family gatherings. After retirement he travelled with Claudette throughout North America and for a time, spent winters in Florida.

All who knew or met him will remember his most engaging quality - an unforgettable sense of humour. It was with him to the end.

The family is especially grateful for the thoughtful care of Dr. Rebecca King and all the wonderful staff on C3 at North Bay Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the North Bay Regional Health Centre would be warmly appreciated.

There will be no visitation or funeral but there will be a celebration of life at a later date. Online condolences can be shared at www.hillsidefuneral.ca
