Improving Laurentian Escarpment Trails
Work is underway on developing the Laurentian Escarpment trials into a premier trails destination.
Discovery Routes and the North Bay Mountain Bike Association are spearheading the project with a number of other groups.
Officials say the partnership will secure long-term use of a four-season network of sanctioned multi-use trails.
“Many local trail users are not aware that the trails east of the Conservation Area exist on private or public lands where permission to be on these trails is not granted,” states a release.
The groups say along with being a community asset, the trails will also support the local economy by attracting provincial and national events.
Discovery Routes is receiving just over $130,000 through the Federal Tourism Growth Program for trail network improvements, including access points, signage, and mapping.
A public consultation session will be held in the new year while an online survey at discoveryroutes.ca/escarpment-trails-project/ is available until the end of December.
Officials say a signature trail event will be held during the city’s centennial next year, to celebrate a legacy of active living in North Bay and mark an officially sanctioned trail system.
Along with Discovery Routes and the mountain bike association, the new committee includes the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority, City of North Bay, Department of National Defense, private property owners and trail users.
