North Bay to Celebrate Black Excellence with Inaugural Banquet Honoring Dr. Saint Firmin Monestime
Nipissing Arts and Culture, Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU), Les Compagnons des francs loisirs, and Fédération des femmes canadiennes françaises du Nord-Est are proud to announce the first-ever Black Excellence Banquet, taking place on February 7 at 5:00 PM at NUSU Student Center, 221 College Dr., North Bay, ON. This momentous event will honor and recognize the contributions of Dr. Saint Firmin Monestime, the first elected Black Canadian Mayor, who served the town of Mattawa from 1964 to 1965 and again from 1970 to 1977.
The Black Excellence Banquet aims to celebrate not only Dr. Monestime's groundbreaking achievements but also the significant contributions of Black Canadians in various fields throughout history. This event is part of a broader initiative to promote awareness, education, and appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and accomplishments of the Black community.
Attendees can look forward to a night filled with live music by Akeem Oh, free cocktail food, and an ambiance of celebration and reflection. There will also be an open donation opportunity to support a BIPOC bursary, which aims to provide financial assistance to students from diverse backgrounds pursuing their education.
We are thrilled to host this inaugural event that not only pays tribute to Dr. Monestime but also recognizes the broader impact of Black Canadians in our community and beyond. This banquet will serve as a platform for education, cultural exchange, and fostering a greater appreciation for diversity in our region.
Guests are encouraged to dress in semi-formal attire for this special evening. Drinks will be available for purchase (19+).
Join us in celebrating Black excellence and honoring those who have paved the way for future generations. Together, we can cultivate a more inclusive and diverse community.
